Programming, outreach and advocacy across three areas of focus, in all 14 counties of the Adirondack North Country.
At ADI we place the lived experiences of community members at the heart of our work, believing that communities should lead and shape the pursuit of transformational justice in the Adirondack Park and beyond. Our programming, outreach and advocacy concentrate on three areas.
Safety & Belonging
Community Policing Initiative
Over the last four years ADI has trained 165+ officers and DEC rangers across all 14 Adirondack North Country counties, working with RENZ Consulting, LLC. The goal is to enhance the relationship between police agencies and the communities they serve, and to address racial disparities affecting BIPOC and other marginalized residents and visitors.
"It's not diversity training." A cognitive-behavioral approach, facilitated as active conversations, rooted in education and tailored to the community, organization or business that engages ADI's services.
Resources helping parents, teachers and families respond swiftly and compassionately when a child is targeted because of race, gender, religion or identity — before, during and after an incident.
Rest, healing, wellness, mentoring and networking for emerging and seasoned leaders who identify as Black, Indigenous and People of Color, and members of other marginalized groups.
LGBTQIA+ Leaders Retreat
Part of the Sustaining BIPOC Leadership Initiative: a retreat for LGBTQIA+ leaders in the region, with facilitators, accommodations and a published programme.
Nature Stewardship
Emerging Stewards Initiative
Developing new generations of Adirondack stewards from marginalized communities throughout New York State, fostering investment in the long-term health of the Park.
Claiming Space
For outdoor enthusiasts and novices of all ages. ADI welcomes excursion and tourism groups from marginalized communities, introducing participants to the Adirondacks in ways that affirm and promote belonging.
Alternative Spring Break
Invites college students from BIPOC communities into the Park for a week of stewardship, learning and connection.
Visitor Use Management & Land Trust Alliance
ADI works to ensure that New York State's Visitor Use Management planning for the High Peaks incorporates both ecological and human protections, and that safety and inclusion are part of the data.
Community Building
Arts Inclusion Initiative
Art that raises awareness, challenges stereotypes and gives marginalized voices a platform, with collaborators including John Brown Lives!, the Adirondack Center for Writing, ADK ArtRise and the Lake Placid Center for the Arts.
ADI Symposiums, Listening Series and Speaker Series
Community gatherings centred on themes that reflect the region's questions, plus a Listening Series and visiting speakers.
ADI supports celebrations that bring people together, including Pride events, Juneteenth and President Quezon History Day.
Design note: Every program here is one content type with the same fields: area of focus, who it's for, what happens, how to take part. That is what lets ADI staff add the next program without a developer — and what makes 'programs for schools' or 'programs near me' possible later without rebuilding anything.
