A day of birding at John Brown Farm

ADI, with the New York State Department of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation, hosts its second annual Black Birders Week celebration for the Adirondack region — at a beautiful birding hotspot that was once the home and final resting place of the abolitionist John Brown.

Together we build community, deepen our connection to the land, and celebrate Black birders. The day features guided bird walks, guest speakers and activities, plus the historic site and the Timbuctoo exhibit, which highlights African American roots in the Adirondacks.

Schedule

Join us for a short visit, or stay and explore all morning. The event proceeds rain or shine, with a modified schedule in the event of rain.

  1. Early birding walkRise and shine for the best birding time of the day — a quiet walk around the farm with Stephan Roundtree and Giselle Pemberton.
  2. Light breakfastMuffins, fruit and beverages (coffee, tea, juice).
  3. Keynote: J. Drew LanhamCelebrating Black Birders Week.
  4. More birding — or explore John Brown FarmIncluding the Timbuctoo exhibit.

Plan your visit

Come for the day or make it a weekend. The region has traditional hotels, rustic resorts and campgrounds, including Meadowbrook Public Campground.

What to bring: comfortable walking shoes or boots, spare socks and shoes in case yours get wet, and layers — the weather can be unpredictable. Binoculars can be provided on request — say so on the registration form.

Design note: Four pages of a Google Site — home, schedule, speakers, venue, plan your visit, suggested reading — become one event page with jump links. Next year's event is made by duplicating this one, not by building another site.
